Two people were killed in a serious crash that shut down part of the Southern State Parkway for several hours overnight, according to the N
ew York State Police.
The fatal multi-vehicle collision happened late Sunday night in the eastbound lanes near Exit 17 at Hempstead Avenue in the Malverne area of Long Island.
Authorities said the crash prompted a large emergency response. Video from the scene showed one vehicle with its front end completely mangled, highlighting the severity of the impact.
Following the crash, police shut down the eastbound lanes of the parkway back to Exit 15 at Corona Avenue, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Officials also blocked one westbound lane near the same exit while crews worked at the scene.
Investigators have not yet released the identities of the victims, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are continuing to gather evidence to determine what led to the deadly collision.
