Authorities are investigating after a 39-year-old female detainee was found dead in her cell at the St. Louis County Jail on Monday morning.
According to a spokesperson for St. Louis County, emergency medical aid was administered as soon as the woman was discovered, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
The Clayton Police Department confirmed the detainee’s age and is leading the investigation alongside the Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials have stated that, at this time, the death does not appear to be suspicious.
While the exact cause of death has not yet been released, authorities say standard procedures are being followed, including a full review by the medical examiner to determine what led to the incident.
In response to the situation, mental health professionals have been made available to support other detainees at the facility, recognizing the emotional impact such an event can have within the jail community.
